Cairns

Well, I have talked about what I have DONE in Cairns, but haven't really said anything about Cairns in general, so here goes!

Cairns is another completely different city from the others I have seen... it is set in the tropics, so everywhere you look there are palm trees and tropical plants... and SO many different kinds of birds! Despite all the ugly buildings, Cairns really is a beautiful city.

As you might have guessed, the majority of the city is geared towards tourists (kind of like Sydney) so everywhere you look someone is trying to sell you something or trying to get you to go somewhere... but if you can look past that, you could really enjoy the city. It is supposedly very safe (good thing since I found myself walking home in the dark a couple of times from the cheap internet place!) and it seems to be fairly clean.

I stayed at a hostel called 'Bohemia Central' and I have very mixed feelings about this place. The staff seems like they are REALLY friendly (probably the friendliest I have met in any hostel yet) but the place itself was kind of annoying. It turned out to be a bit of a party hostel, so people were loud all night long... and my room happened to be very close to the bar... so of course I could hear all the drunk people at all hours of the night. And if they weren't out there in the bar getting drunk, they were pounding around the hallway outside my room, shouting to one another. Yeah, annoying... especially because almost every morning I was here I had to wake up early for some kind of activity. And then, for the last 2 days, my interior light in the room hasn't been working. And my room is in a spot that doesn't get much natural sunlight... so I have been having to find things in the dark, both in the daytime and at night. I keep asking them to fix it, but they keep giving me this sob story about how 'oh they were supposed to come' and 'oh those lights are a pain to fix' and they keep promising to fix it... but here I am, and it is still broken. Not like it matters anymore, since I am leaving tomorrow, but still, it seems kind of ridiculous... but whatever.

Oh, I didn't tell you the most amazing part about Cairns! Every night and every morning at sunset and sunrise... thousands and thousands of bats fill the sky... and I mean, THOUSANDS. They fill the sky, and all you can hear are bats... I was outside once for the evening flight, and they would swoop down pretty close past you as they fly by... it was absolutely amazing... and funny watching people run by screaming :)

Anyhow, tomorrow I am off to Airlie Beach for 1 night, then to Hervey Bay for a trip to Frasier Island... which is supposed to be an amazing, pristine island completely made out of sand, which has the clearest lakes you will ever see... then it is the Steve Irwin Zoo! Yay!

AND I AM NOW ALL CAUGHT UP WITH THE BLOGS!!!! So I can stop being rushed with them now... I feel like I have cheated you guys a bit with my last few because I just wanted to get them all done before I left another city...

Anyhow, I am off to bed... gotta wake up at 5:30 to get to the bus station by 6:30... night all! Or morning to you Americans!

So much to comment on. So little time.
I'm glad I didn't know when you were doing the white water rafting because by the looks of those great photos, I would have been worried the whole time. I'm impressed. And you being the only female. Doubly impressive.
I just can't say enough positive things about the way your making the most out of your time there. It seems that you've done a lifetime of living in a couple short months.
I can't wait for the video to come out.

Mom, bats are hard to take a picture of because it is pretty dark by the time they come out and then they fly by so fast... I got some video though that I didn't post because it was taking so long... I'll post it on youtube another time.

Thanks dad, and it's not over yet! Plus, I am going to try snorkeling one more time (with motion sickness pills...)

And Cheryl, they didn't change the name... I just call it that so people know which one I'm talking about :-P

I DEFINITELY would have been one of those people covering my head with my hands, screaming at the top of my lungs, and running for cover from the bats...I HATE when the bats come out here, and I can't imagine seeing THOUSANDS!
Yuck!
